Off the Beaten Path 2015 - Pittsburgh's Latodami Nature Event Center at North Park

Looking for a place to take a brisk hike, a quiet nature walk or participate in an outdoor  conservation event Latodami Nature Center, the gem of North Park in Wexford. The nature center boasts a newly dredged pond, a historic old barn originally part of the dairy farm, many forest and field habitats, as well as a few stream and wetlands.  There are currently eleven nature trails that wander the nature center's 250 acres of the fields and forests of the immediate area.
that is off the beaten path but still close enough to the city of Pittsburgh?  Well then you need to visit

Whether it is a warm summer morning or a snow blanketed landscape, the trails are are open from dawn to dusk.  Check their website for all of their terrific outdoor 2015 Pittsburgh events and happenings like the upcoming Beaver Walk-Talk on August 1.  The walk will explore dams and wet meadows created by local the resident BeaverBe sure to sign up for the Christmas Bird Count on December 26th.  The Christmas Bird Count lets visitors take part in the ongoing research to document winter birds in North Park

Here are some upcoming event listings for Latodami Nature Center:

August 1. 2015 – Beavers – 10 am to 12 pm – Learn all about North America’s largest rodent, the Beaver. Almost exterminated from Pennsylvania in the late 1800’s, these aquatic mammals have made a tremendous comeback in recent years, now inhabiting watercourses throughout the commonwealth, including the Pine Creek Watershed.  Our walk-talk will have us exploring dams and wet meadows created by our resident Beaver.

September 19, 2015 – Orchard Gardens – 10 am to 12 pm. Pennsylvania ranks fifth among apple producing states in the United States, but apple trees are under-utilized in home landscapes. Apple trees are long-lived, have beautiful and fragrant spring flowers, provide cooling shade in summer, and provide tasty fruit in the fall. With nice shape, small size, and ease of maintenance, dwarf varieties do quite well in urban and suburban sites and add value to properties. Join us today for a tour of our orchards to learn how you can incorporate these trees into your garden.

September 19, 2015 – Seed Collecting - 2 pm to 4 pm. Large and small, come one, come all and help us gather grass and wildflower seeds from our meadows and wetlands. These precious seeds collected today will be sown on later dates throughout other habitats to increase natural diversity and to be food and shelter for native wildlife.
